The legend of the Dogman in Benzie county is that he is a half dog half man cryptozoological creature that inhabits the woods of northern Mighigan and first reported in 1887. In 2011 a Traverse City filmmaker named Rich Brauer made a movie about the Dogman in Benzie County. It was a popular local cult classic and Rich followed up with a sequel a couple of years later. I’ve never seen the Dogman in the woods but I did see him as Grand Marshal of the Beulah 4th of July parade and even photographed him waterskiing on Crystal Lake one summer. No, really! This photo was a tongue in cheek joke made by identifying an old root cellar as his birthplace 10 years before the first reported sighting. The sign and root cellar have been replaced by an RV park.
